What is the Nelson Mandela Bay Ratepayers Association?
The association is a non-political, non-racial, non-profit organization with legal standing in terms of its constitution and is able to act in terms of Section 5 of the Municipal Systems Act No. 32 of 2000:
- to represent local NMB Ratepayers
- to lend support to all fair, lawful and laudable objectives of the Municipal Council
- to guard against over-taxation by preventing unreasonable tax increases
- to uncover corruption and misuse of public property and monies
- to act as a watchdog over all NMB matters
NMBRA Achievements
- Stopped a donation by the NMB Council of R10 Million to the “election process”
- Submitted a memorandum on the budget that caused tariff savings of at least 1.5% for ratepayers
- Successfully pressured the Council to end the penalty water tariffs in the Metro
- Filed an urgent application in respect of the legality of water rates in 2011
- Assisted in pressuring the Council to release the “Kabuso” report
- Met with leaders of various political parties represented in Council, voicing our concerns
- Assisted numerous members with individual issues with the NMB Municipality
- Took a lead in local anti-drug protests
